According to Bill Bryson the first parkway went through a park. It was a short length of good road that you could drive along and admire the trees, shrubs and gardens on the side. The name stuck for some reason. BTW, I don't usually park on my driveway. I park in the garage!

In the early years of driving cars were used for family excursions, such as going on picnics, etc. Early roadways were designed with a park-like setting dividing the lanes of traffic. (giving way to the term Parkway) This was done to make driving more enjoyable and allowed the driver and their families to pull over almost anywhere and enjoy a picnic. It was a simpler time back then.
