The funny thing is that when they all crawl along in the slow lane a big design error in our motorway appears: Has anyone else noticed that most motorway junction signs are on the LEFT of the motorway, and are therefore blocked by big, tall lorries when you need to read them?! They only use the middle lane for overtaking, unlike a lot of idiots who think it's OK to stay in the middle lane... They are the ones who should be jailed for driving without due care and attention :)Because lorry drivers think they own the road when they quite frankly don't. The lanes are not meant to be used, as slow, medium, and fast. the middle lanes are for travelling, the left is for turning of the motorway. unless your driving a particularly slow vehicle. the right is for overtaking. Probably because they know there highway code, they have to study hard to get an HGV I think. I'm not a lorry driver. If your doing 70 in the middle lane then your going as fast as your aloud to go anyway.What do you think about biodiesel?
usually because people who aren't confident enough to drive properly on the motorway drive in the left hand lane at 40/50 mph so the lorries move to middle lane to get past. if there's more up ahead - they'll stay there as they could have difficulty getting back out into the middle lane without losing speed.If people travelled nearer to the speed limit - there'd be less traffic issues on motorways....
Same as bad lane hogging habbits with car drivers - if you hog the middle lane, people joining the motorway have to cross 3 lanes to pass you - therefore the right hand lane gets congested, and when someone else squeezes in to pass a middle lane hogger - the cars behind have to drop back to create a safer space for the car, this causes 1 person to 'dab' the brakes instead of just easing off the throttle with plenty of time (they're obviously not watching whats goin on, or they're nervous). This then causes everyone behind to dab their brakes which causes a knock on effect for miles ending up in very hard braking further back in the lane, which can cause accidents - all because someone drives too slowly or lane hogs.... and they're oblivious to all this thinking they're being safe.

Why does traffic slow down during rush hour when the speed limit is the same as non rush hour?
In defence of truck drivers it's often a case of maintaining momentum once it's built up. The truck in front may be doing 58 mph but for the one behind doing say 62mph slowing down may mean multiple gear changes. It's easier all round just to move into the overtaking lane and crawl past [ probably taking next to no time and hardly delaying anyone].On a 3 lane motorway there is absolutely no problem, but on a 2-lane motorway it may cause some mild irritation but very little in the way of actual delay.

I have been driving many years and i will say this i think HGV drivers are the most considerate on the roads they realise they have a big vehicle and it cant be easy manoeuvring those things around so good on you Guys you do a good jobwhy traffic lights on motorway slip roads?
I do 50-55,000 miles a year in my car through my job, and the biggest problem I ever see is not truck drivers but, the stupid idiots in their 4x4's and oversized saloon cars trundling along in the middle lane.Truck drivers are tied to getting to their destination by a fixed time, or at least only have a fixed period of time that they can drive and as such the difference between 54mph and 57mph is substantial, furthermore, when approaching another truck who is travelling a few mph slower than you, it is usually easier to pass them rather than slow down and lose momentum.

yess lorries can ONLY do 55mph, but when youre hauling 30 odd tons, and some sweet innocent is dawdling along at 45..(you know it happens) youve either got to overtake, or slow down.... and accellerating any HGV takes time, and uses gallons of fuel at a time...

if we stuck as you suggest, to the slow lane your goods wouldnt get to the shops. your manufactured good wouldnt get to teh docks... and the list goes on.. how about all you car drivers stop whingeing, you ve managed to get a licence, use the outside lane! HGV's are banned from this... or is it a little scary.. being harassed and intimidated into driving faster than you'd like, and a lot faster than the conditions dictate...
we drive as professionals, not sunday afternoon tourists. class 2's are restricted to 55, class 1's can do 60... and that 5mph is all youve got to overtake... and pretty soon all 7.5tonners will join us in those two lanes...
sure we'd like to go faster.. but the downside is, we still cant break the laws of physics... the faster we go, the longer it takes us to stop... from 60 fully loaded its around 100 yards... 300 feet... if the roads are wet, its further or we do the jacknife special... and everyone dies.

Could you please tell me what the 'slow' lane is? IAs far as I am aware all lanes on a motorway are to be used at any speed up to the legal limit. For a start, HGVs are limited to 60mph on motorways, and what about cars or any other vehicle which hogs the middle or outer lanes when the inner lanes are free.
