In the US it took 3 decades to complete. Construction began as an initiative under President Eisenhower in the 1950's.

I believe the core of the Interstate system went down in around a decade. They took a lot longer to finish all the little (and expensive) bits. . I remember when I-80 through Salt Lake City involved being on streets for awhile.

Well...if memory serves the law authorizing the interstate highway system was signed by President Eisenhower in 1955 and they are STILL adding to the interstate system as I type this. So far it's taken 52 years...and still counting.

They have been working on ours since 1958 and it's still not finished. I drove trucks over the road for 13 years, and I haven't found anywhere there's not construction still !

It started in 1955 and they are still being constructed. The future I-22 through Alabama and Mississippi is a good example. This will be a beautiful country if they ever finish building it!
