Take a look at Dartford if you are considering anywhere in the South East quadrant. It is just over the border in Kent. It is considerably cheaper than anywhere else that close to London (17 miles) yet it has a fantastic train service via 3 different lines to several different terminals. I lived there for 20 years and never regretted it.

It costs about £15 to travel from Reading to London by train which takes exactly half an hour, and dare i say is quite reliable as well. Slough is also a cheaper option but who wants to live there!

I'd say Essex is most likely the cheapest county for housing within an easy commute to London though you need to be picky as some areas aren't that nice.
If you want cheaper still try Norfolk but it's over an hour away by train.
Real cheap would be Peterborough though I wouldn't recommend it.
