Question:
If the speed limit is 65 mph, how can there be a legal "fast lane?" i suppose the right lane could be the "slow lane" for those people that don't wish to go 65, but in reality, assuming you don't wish to be pulled over by the police, how can there be a "fast lane?" It just doesn't make sense to me.

slower traffic keep right. left lane for passing only. this is for those people that do not go the speed limit u have to c tha tall the time. just so happens that your occasional speeder will take advantage of this it is supposed to keep traffic moving better. It's not called a fast lane by the people who designed the freeways. It's called the Number 1 lane. The lanes are numbered. 1 is the inside lane nearest the center, followed by 2,3, etc, until you get to what is referred to as the slow lane. But it isn't called the slow lane, either. if there is a carpool lane, it is called the carpool lane, diamond lane, or HOV lane, then the numbers start.
In legal terms there's no such thing as a "fast lane". That term is more slang then anything else.

Would you give up your seat on bus or subway, if...?
The 'fast lane' is for those that are not getting off the freeway in awhile. It is to be used for passing. Its not so you can exceed the speed limit (although most do, even I am guilty of it).The slow lane is for those entering and exiting the freeway. It slows things down, so those carrying on through can use the fast lane and move on by.
The middle lane(s) is to be used by those moving over to exit soon, or moving out of the slow lane as they are speeding up.
