There was a BIG push to start inventing ways to save energy. Everything from required improvements in fuel mileage of autos sold by the big three, to better lighting and using the sun's rays for heating and other uses, carpooling, etc etc etc

No. This is a question of economics. If rationing happened, the oil companies who are owned, in a sense of the word, by shareholders. They would need to apply the law of supply and demand to remain profitable. In essence reduce refinery output to stabilize prices and profits.

Rationing gasoline is not any form of solution to the problem we face. We're burning dinosaur bones, and there's just only so much of it to go around. Telling people that they can have only so much will make the price go up, companies will continue to drill and stockpile oil... It would be a serious mess.

Think of it, imagine waking up to find out you cant drive to the in-laws for thanksgiving dinner cause your out of gas and cant buy more till monday? People will start smuggling gasoline through shady dealings for 10 times the market value.. gas will turn into cocaine...

OPEC is a cartel and can set the price at anything they want. One of the reasons fuel is so expensive is the supply/demand law. Fuel is in great demand right now by China and the massive building they're doing in that country... NOT the war.
