People powered transportation like rickshaws are more common in the spring/summer and usually are pulled by a bicycle. The safest way to pay for things is by credit card (if an option) - because it is easier to dispute later (and most likely in your language over the phone) if you need to. Our "Mass Transit" system has not yet been able to put this all into one "ticketing system" and may never do this. The safest way to visit NY is to stay with a travel group and tour by bus (if you do not speak english well).
