If my kid gets sick at school, I don't want to have to whip out my bus pass and rely on the mass transit system to get me there in a timely manner. I also don't want to bring a pukey kid home on the bus.

Why try and slow down traffic?
Public transportation is regulated and controlled by the city, or county. It may lease the managment out to others, but in essance they are public. As far as blocking the lanes. They are trying to make the public transportation as fast as possible, sometimes at the expense of the driving public. At the same time does the average citizen have the right to croud the streets because he wants to drive his own car. Each person makes all of the others a little slower. Allowing the bus lanes provides an incentive to use the public transportation because it may be a little faster. If more people use the public transportation, then there would be fewer cars on the road, everybody wins.
It's a safe Bet no matter where we live in North America our Tax Dollars pay very dearly for those Bus Lanes so to think any Lobbying would change that , FAT CHANCE . Public Transportation is just that if it went Private you can be sure the service would go down hill real quick if the Company holding the Contract to provide the Service couldn't keep up with the Demand. Crime happens Anywhere PERIOD.

Bus lanes work in Europe as well as other places.Boston and Los Angeles have bus rapid transit systems where busses travel along dedicated rights of way. They are usually precursors to light rail or heavy rail systems depending on ridership.
What is a stop time at a traffic signal?
NYC and DC have two of the top 10 transit systems in America and both places have horrible traffic jams. Public transit is very safe and a thief can break your car window to steal an iPod just as easily as yanking the iPod off your neck on public transit. A lot of people are spoiled with cars and their "convenience." Yet, I see many well-off people use public transit but the traveling salesman or soccer mom with 3 kids would have little or no use for public transit.
A soccer mom and her 3 kids cannot take public transit to go to soccer practice so the gas guzzling minivan comes into play.
