Why do people change lanes in front of you when there's no one behind you?

Question:
Is it me or what? I'm not a slow driver and I keep up with traffic, but I also like to keep a safe distance between myself and the car in front of me just in case they break suddenly. But everyday when I commute to and from work someone will cut in that space with no warning in order to change lanes, and there's no one behind me! I can't understand it because it seems to me these people are putting peoples lives in danger. I'm beginning to wonder if this is the normal way to drive today and I'm wrong? What do you think?

You should drive a truck. They do it to me everyday, too, and it takes me a lot longer to stop than it would a car. I would also do a lot more damage to them if they did stop quickly.
