Stand somewhere that's legal (so not on a motorway) with lots of room, safe for them to stop, and where they can see you from a long way off. Smile!
When a car stops, don't say 'Can you take me to x', but ask them where they're going. This gives you a get-out clause if you decide you don't like the look of them - you can then say 'Oh, thanks but I'm going to y'.
Be good company, if you sense they want to chat. Travel as light as possible - you've got to carry it! Five suitcases might put drivers off. Don't put your bag in the boot, keep it on your knees in case you have to get out fast. If it's a long drive, and the driver's tired, offer to drive.
