Is 3 miles too far?

Question:
im planning on attending a different school next semester. to avoid freeway traffic, i plan on taking a train - which would take about 20 minutes and then ride a bike from the train station which is about 3 miles away from the school. is it worth all that just to avoid traffic? mapquest states that driving a freeway would take about 26 minutes (this is without traffic, of course)

Is it better for your pocketbook to use high octane gas which burns slower then using a lower low octane?

You have to factor in adverse weather. Not knowing where you live, I still imagine there is some sort of adverse weather which will make you bike riding difficult. What is your commute plan for these days? For instance, will you drive when it is raining? If so, you need to factor that into the equation. At my school, you need a permit to park ... add that in. If you'll get a ride ... if you'll take a taxi ... What you are doing is creating a list of expenses, options on each side. Your bicycle requires no maintenance and is free. Good. How about the backpack you will need? What about the bicyle lock? On the other side, put all the driving expenses, factored in at 45 cents a mile (or your local currency) - this counts gas, oil, and other regular expenses. Don't forget the different permits you'll need. And factor in a value for your time. 1/2 an hour will be an hour roundtrip, but isn't the train and bike combination about that too? So you are not saving time . just make sure one decision saves you something. For instance, with the biking option, you get the added benefit of a cardio workout each day. With the car option, you get to stay warm. Just think over the pros and cons to make the decision.

How expensive is gas in your area?

An option you did not mention is carpooling. If this is college (you said school, so I don't know), there is often a Commuter Students Association which may have folks who want/need to rideshare. It's an option ...
