Question:
Even if you are on a project, why cant they take the day off and let people get to their families?!?! My parents are on their way to visit and they are merging 3 interstate lanes into 1, so they are stopped, not moving an inch right now. WHY DO THEY DO THAT?!?!
Answers:
What is the commute like if you live in Joliet and work in/near Wood Dale, IL?
To answer your question, I'd like to tell you a story first. Just last week, a giant sinkhole opened beneath the only East to West highway in my state. All 3 lanes of traffic has a disintegrated road bed. They had to shut down this interstate highway for 1 week to fix the problem. For people to navigate around the highway closure, they traveled back roads, all of them built for neighborhood or farm travel, neither of which are disposed to high traffic. Other folks simply went to another state (and I live in a big one) to get a highway going in the direction in which they wanted to travel. What's the best way to cut back and/or save on your car fuel consumption?
That said, I am certain that the DOT would not work to fix a road on a holiday were it not for a very pressing need. You see, that's at least overtime if not double-time ... very expensive to do, causes ill will in the workers, and pisses off motorists. However, roads have to be fixed. Sometimes we can't predict the issues or the timetables. While I am certain it was very distressing for you to have to sit in traffic for the lane closures, I am equally certain the decision to do the work was not spitefully made, just to make you late for the holiday meal. There's a really good reason for them to be working on the road on turkey day, why not just be grateful that you were relaxing in your car on Thanksgiving and not having to walk all that distance?
send a letter to your mayor ask him that,i bet he is home on thanksgiven
