It is confusing for me when I find out that the exits' numbers may be duplicated.

California only started numbering its freeway and highway exits a few years ago - in 2002, and has not completely finished updating all the signs.

Basically the numbering system is based on the mile markers. North-south highways (like Interstate 5) are numbered from south to north - exit 1 is near the US-Mexico border, and exit 796 is near the California-Oregon border. East-west highways (like I-80) are measured from the west end to the east end.

So there might not be an exits for a long stretch, and the exit number might jump from 126 to 153 without any numbers in between.. but then you know that the distance between those thow exits is 153-126=27 miles.

When there are multiple exits within the same mile marker range -- let's say that there are two exits around milepost 45.. at 44.75 miles and 45.3 miles - they would be labeled 45A and 45B.

At some points Interstate 5 and a state route might overlap for a few miles - at these points where there are exits, the exit numbers that would go for Interstate 5 will trump out the exit numbers that would be used for the state route.

the state of ca. is one of the last to use exit ## they dont even use mile markers, they blaim it on lack of money, thek are starting to numbre them now. for all interstate hwys the milemarkers get smaller doing east to west, smaller going south to north.
