If I'm on a highway, where do I pull over?

Question:
So if I am driving on a 3 lane highway in the far left hand lane and a police officer turns his sirens on. Am I supposed to pull over to the left shoulder (closest to me) or do I signal and cross lanes (obviosly when safe...) to the right hand shoulder, crossing 2 lanes of traffic? Because I know it is a "rule" to pull over to the right hand side of the road.

If the shoulder isn't large enough that the officer will be able to safely approach your window, try to exit the highway. They're not expecting you to pull over immediately, they're expecting you to pull over safely. Never, ever pull into the left shoulder.

Hitchhiking, need advice?

I got this from the site below in my sources: Always pull over to the right. Always pull over on the right side of the roadway. On divided highways, signal and safely move over to the far right lane, and then to the shoulder. When you come to a complete stop, choose a section of roadway that has a full shoulder, without guardrails if possible. Pulling over on the left may obstruct traffic, and pulling over next to a guardrail may make it difficult for the officer to safely approach your car. Both are mistakes that won't win favor.

Yeah when you're looking for a place to pull over, think about the officer's safety as he's getting out of his car and giving you a ticket. You may not like him at the time, but seeing the guy get creamed would be terrible for your mental health, and an apparent consideration for his safety will definitely get you brownie points.

Coming from Australia and driving on the left side of the road we pull to the left hand side. Police will usually choose a suitable spot for us to pull over and will turn their sirens on as you approach that point. If there is no suitable spot to pull over then they simply follow they find such a spot.
