Driving from San Francisco to Wisconsin. Please help!!?

Question:
I was wondering if anyone knew the best route to go. I am going in December and would feel a lot better if I could avoid going through the roughest parts of the mountains. Map quest and things like that just show me the fastest way. I would rather find the safest way. I am not a good driver in the snow and am alrealy nervous! Thanks

My parents are the same way.

Englewood Cliff??

Detour SOUTH towards L.A. Then take I-40 to I-35. Go up I-35 to get close to Wisconsin and take the smaller highways in from Austen, MN. You avoid Truckee and Salt lake City ( known for mountain passes ) that way.

Or take I-40 to I-25 towards Denver, then east up I-76 to I-80. Still no mountain passes and great scenery.

I have done I-80 all the way. In summer.

Driving, what do people think about being charged per mile on the roads??

that is a long drive and a bad month to do it. Why not take a train or bus if you can. If you have to drive and Wisconsin is in the northern half of the U.S. you just have to come straight across or it will add too many miles to the trip. Watch the weather forecasts closely and allow as much time as possible and get chains for your tires incase you need them and pray for a mind winter.
