Can you acquire a 14-day plate from a private auto sale, or are they only available with a dealer purchase?

Question:
I live in Maine and I've bought a Jeep in a private sale. Long story short, I won't be able to get the title for 3 weeks. In order to register the vehicle, I need the title. Can I apply for one of those paper license plates or are they only available with a dealer purchase?

Beyond establishing the legally registered owner during the sale of a vehicle, the Maine BMV also takes on the responsibility of regulating and issuing the decals, or tags, that prove that a Maine vehicle's registration and paperwork are current. Registration renewals require proof of financial liability, most often in the form of adequate auto insurance.

These are just some of the services provided by the ME BMV.

I don't think so. Most I've heard is a three day permit.

Can I buy insurance with an expired license?

Only a dealer can get those plates. Why you bought a car that the title was not given to you at the same time that you gave the seller the money is beyond sense.I do not know how long you have to get your vehicle registered but it's never more than TEN (10) day from the date of purchase. If you get pulled over before you get the title and have the vehicle registered they will tow and impound the vehicle MAJOR EXPENSE OUT OF YOUR POCKET TO GET IT OUT and you will be cited for driving a unregistered vehicle ANOTHER MAJOR EXPENSE OUT OF YOUR POCKET and your license may get suspended ALSO A MAJOR EXPENSE OUT OF YOUR POCKET TO GET IT BACK plus without a license you cannot drive to work so you will lose pay and possibly your job.IF IT WAS ME I WOULD GO BACK TO THE SELLER AND DEMAND THE TITLE AT ONCE OR YOUR MONEY BACK.though the seller might refuse and then you will have to get a lawyer ANOTHER EXPENSE OUT OF YOUR POCKET to take the seller to court and you might lose there. Also before your court date may come up you may recive the title and then your lawsuit is moot but you are going to be out the money you paid the lawyer.Since you allready bought a vehicle without getting the title I would park it until you get the title and bum rides from friends and family members.I know it's a pain but it's better than having to pay all those fines and fees. or you can take your chances and drive the vehicle until you get it registered but I have allready warned you what could happen
