I bought a 2000 Mercedes S430 two weeks ago; around 10PM last night a guy knocked on my door and told me he had hit my car while backing out of my neighbor's driveway (across the street). I went to inspect the damage, and found the front left panel had been pushed slightly, and there was a crease in the line of the fender - it doesn't look serious, but it was dark.

I got the name, address, and phone number of the guy, but he didn't have his insurance information - he said he has Mercury insurance. I told him I would take the car for an estimate sometime during the week, and call him with the results.

Go out immediately and get 2-3 estimates from whichever body shops you would want to do the work. If you don't know of any, asks friends for referrals.Call the guy right away and tell him the amount of the estimates and ask for his insurance information. Make sure you have his name, address, policy # and the agents phone number. Call the agents office and turn in a claim. Do not wait for this guy to do it. He may be on the up and up but don't take any chances. If he won't give you his insurance information you can call the police and turn in a report or you can turn in the damage to your own company. They will pay for the damage, less your deductible, and will go after his company for the amount paid out along with your deductible.
So how long and how much will this type of insurance cost ?
You could also go to http://www.mercuryinsurance.com/claims/... and call the phone number for your state. If the guy gave you his name and address ask them to look up his policy by name and turn in a claim.

The dealer's bodyshop is a good place to start. Also, make sure that the man's information is accurate. Follow up and get his insurance information. It's a mercedes, why didn't you call the cops? FIRST - file a police report ASAP, this should have been done immediately. Insurance companies generally will not pay out on an accident without a police report. Then contact the insurance company and ask them what you should do. Re contact the driver if you cannot find his insurance company. It may be useful if you have uninsured motorist coverage if his insurance does not pan out. At that point you would contact your insurance company.
