I have a court date on Monday. I've been advised to put insurance on the car I was driving and take proof of insurance to court with me. I, however, can't afford to maintain insurance on this particular vehicle. What can I expect on my court date? A fine, or worse?

Then you shouldn't be driving that particular vehicle. Yes, if found guilty, definitely a fine, perhaps having your license revoked to go with it. And if you don't take insurance with you to show that you have corrected the problem, it might even get worse than that, with that vehicle impounded.Didn't file any claims on my insurance this year can i get money back?
If you can't afford to put insurance on it, cancel the registration, and take proof of that. You should not be driving, period. If you show proof of new insurance, or proof the car is now stored, you may mitigate the fine, but nothing changes the fact you were driving without insurance. Imagine what you would be facing had you hit a young surgeon, or a school bus full of children. DO NOT insure the vehicle to get a document to show the judge you are now a "good little doobie" and then cancel it.How can you even THINK of driving that car again without insurance? What if a mini van runs a redlight and hits your car? What if the driver then claims you are at fault? What if they claim injury on all their children in the mini van? Are you prepared to pay thousands of dollars in damages to their vehicle and tens of thousands of dollars on injuries? You know that wont just go away right? You could owe tens of thousands of dollars for the rest of your life. And no one would be there to defend you... let me guess. "this will never happen to me." You should be ashamed.

Without knowing what state your from its hard to say for sure but in MN you would be required to show proof of insurance at the court to lower or remove the fine, then you would need to prove insurance to the state for 3 to 5 years depending on if this has happened before. In MN the insurance company would notify the state if you fail to pay insurance and the policy lapses, then the state will take your license and has the right to impound your vehicle. Unfortunately a no insurance ticket to a lot of companies is considered a major violation and will keep you from getting preferred rates. I would try Progressive and see if they can get you a decent rate or try an independent insurance agency that writes for more than one company so you can get several quotes.Good luck.
