In Canada, can the government take a percentage from a car accident settlement?

Question:
I was in a car accident over 2 years ago. Now I have been offered a settlement which isn't big bucks but my Lawyer has informed me that the government takes 30,0000 off the total of what they offer me.
Can the government do this or is this the truth what the lawyer has told me?
I just would like to put my mind at ease before I have to sign papers to say I accept their offer
So if anyone knows anything about this legal matter, I would appreciate any help I can get.
Thanks
