Question:
I just bought an '88 Firebird, and I will be registering it this week. It has bad tires, 3 with a small amount of tread left, and one newer one. All are dry rotted. Could I pass inspection with these tires, even if I paid to get it done at a garage? I live in NJ if that helps.
Answers:
In TX dry rotted tires will pass simply because the inspectors don't pay attention to anything but tread depth. There does have to be a specific amount of tread, however. There will be a tread bar on the inside of one of the grooves on the tires. If the bar is even with the outside of the tread, you need new tires.
