Till the tags expire and it needs to be registered at new address!just tell the officer you are visiting the state how the hell is he gonna know how long you've been there, lie to him it will be ez(if your drivers license is from TX your just plain screwed though)
Not sure about Texas. But in CA, you have to register in-state within "30 days of moving there". Personally, I was here for over a year before I registered in CA, and I had no problems. It's a little white lie that you'll never get caught in- how do they know how long you've lived there? They don't have any way of knowing. Register whenever your old registration's about to run out.
Legally, you have thirty days after becoming a resident to get a Texas driver's license. One of the requirements of getting your license is proof that you've registered your out of state vehicle in TX.

I moved to TX from NJ about 2 years ago. If you live here permanently now, you have 30 days to change over to TX registration.
Take it from me, just do yourself a favor and register your car here. I was pulled over when I first moved here just because I had New Jersey tags and the cop asked me how long I had lived here. At that time I had only been here about 2 weeks. He very nicely told me that I only have about another 2 weeks to change my registration and license over .... I kept putting it off and putting it off . after 6 months I was eventually pulled over again and the officer (different cop, but they must have had a record that I'd been pulled over 6 months earlier) said, "Now...We both know you've been here a little over 30 days, right?" and he gave me 2 tickets - one for my tags and one for my license not being changed.
