i've tried loads of insurance companies and they all want around £1600 for 3rd party fire & theft and thats for a 1.2, help, i've promised him a car but cant afford these daft prices, and no he wont be a boy racer, he's a sensible lad.

Two years ago we insured our son for the first time, on a "J" reg 1 litre Metro - car cost £300, insurance cost £1300 (3rd party, fire and theft).The only way to lower premiums, if you want him to be the policy holder and not a named driver, is to buy an older car. A 1litre may cheaper than a 1.2 but it won't be much - our son is now driving a 1.3 KA and that was no more expensive than a 1.0l Corsa.
We use Liverpool Victoria - they were the cheapest when we first insured him, and because we also insure our other car, and the house with them, we get 5% off each policy. Something like that might be worth investigating, I don't know if other companies do the same.

Have you tried adding yourself as the main driver/policy holder and him as a named driver.I passed when I was 17 and I was driving my mum's car until I was 21 - insurance dropped and I was able to afford it as a main driver.

Hi, you could take the insurance out in your name and add him as a named driver, this normally saves a substantial amount of money, but (and its a big but) the majority of companies don't award no claims discounts to a second named driver. I managed to get my first year cheaply but then found the cost spiralled after the first year plus i had an accident and didn't build up a years no claims. I got fed up of going round sites filling in details to find that the insurance was still too expensive. I tried a couple of comparison sites where they do the legwork and ended up going through http://www.moneysupermarket.com/motor/... saved me a fortune and meant i could have a life instead of spending hours looking lol ;-)
