Now when I signed up with Progressive Insurance and I don't elect uninsured motorist coverage it makes me sign a statement that I elected not to do so and is below the state minimum.

If you are absolutely sure no one is out there driving without insurance, and that they will never hit you, it's a waste of money. Otherwise, having uninsured/under insured coverage is a wonderful idea. And it is usually quite cheap to go above the state minimums, and that's a good idea too. I have mine set at a million.

Silly question. If you are hit and injured by an uninsured motorist, who is going to cover you? Who is going to pay the hospital bill, and replace your income? By the way, state minimum liability is crappy insurance. If you injure or kill a doctor, that little insurance will do you little good. Even damage a Cadillac and you are in trouble. I carry minimum $1,000,000 just to drive around, and we have $5,000,000 on the car with that gets the most use (the highest exposure).YES...do you have any idea how many people are driving in CA without insurance? Why is Car Insurance more expensive in some areas?
If your UM/UIM limits are equal to those of the at fault person, and you are hurt, you are unable to recover damages under your UM coverage. However, if your coverage is HIGHER than the other guys, you can recover up to the difference. For example, the other guy has 15/30 limits, but you have 50/100 UM limits...you can recover, after the offset from the other guy, of 35/70.

FYI.uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage only applies to bodily injury claims. UMPD (uninsured motorists property damage) applies to your vehicle, up to $3500, if you are hit by a uninsured driver. You can not carry UMPD and Collision coverage at the same time--it's one or the other.
Yes, you need it. When someone hits you it pays for your injuries. You may want to try a website that compares multiple companies at once to get you the best price. I am paying less than ½ after I did.

California has more problems with uninsured motorists than most states and you should have it. Will certainly cause you to have less grief if you do have it and it isn't all that expensive so why not. remember the illegals don't have insurance.More Questions & Answers ...
