Maryland Duplicate car title question?!!?

Question:
I bought a car and the owner said the previous owner lost the title. (This new owner never tagged the car, just fixed it up). I don't know who the previous owner is, so the only thing I have is a bill of sale from the new owner. He told me to file for a duplicate title, but I think it would have to be by the 1st owner.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Sorry this is so confusing! : )

Wow, you may have just bought a big problem, you should never purchase a car without a title, number one problem in car buying/selling. The bill of sale you have, go back to that guy and get a NOTORIZED bill of sale, describing the vehicle by the VIN and make/model/yr. Now go to the DMV in your state, give them the VIN and they can run it, see if it has ever been registered/titled in your state. If it has, that's good, a record has been established and you can probably succeed at getting a title. If the VIN offers no record in your state, then you have to get an inspection for certain, depending on the state you live in, you may be able to register the car for a three year period, then apply for a title. Some states won't allow that, so you'll need to work with the DMV to resolve your problem. Remember, never buy a car without a title, and look at the title to make sure there are not problems you are overlooking, like mileage descrepency's or rebuilt brands.
