Can I buy a car and have the title in my name and still be covered under my father's auto insurance?
If what you're concerned about is insurance, the only difference is if you move from a high risk area to a low risk one. Insurance has their own way of keeping track of these things and it will follow you to the new state. That isn't a matter for the DMV. You should assume that the points will travel, too, just to be on the safe side. Just as you can't be caught out of state without it showing up as points on your license record in the state you're licensed in. The information is easy to share and as a matter of course, it usually is.After you have moved just go in to their DMV. Ask what you need. Most states have 30-90 days to register. Don't tell all about everything. Be cool and don't create problems for yourself. You may be able to get much lower insurance. Of course you will have to get or have transfered your driving record. You will need your title, insurance, smog check and driving record. The less said by you the better. Good Luck.
