Question:
does the renter have to prove he has his own auto policy or can he only be a "driver" on his parent's policy?
Answers:
How does car insurance work?!?
Liability will not cover you for a rental car if you are only a driver on your parents' policy. You have to be a named insured on the policy. That means, the liability from your parents' policy will only cover your parents driving a rental car. So, if you rent the car in your name, buy all the insurance offered - liability, comprehensive & collision. Also, I am also pretty sure that you will need to be 25 yrs old to rent a car. Don't forget, if there could be any other drivers of the vehicle, make sure you list them on the rental contract. If you do not list them - DO NOT LET THEM DRIVE - only the OWNER of the vehicle can give someone permission to drive the vehicle & in this case it is the rental car company. If you let an unlisted driver drive a rental & there is an accident, any insurance you purchase is voided, probably the contract is voided and any resulting damage is your personal responsibility.Good luck.
Does anyone know anything about insurance?

most rental companies will not rent to a person under the age of 25 unless you have a insurance policy that provides a rental car if yours was wrecked good luckI've lost my paper counterpart...?
Most car rental agencies will not rent to individuals under the age of 25. You can purchase insurance at the rental agency, to cover you during the rental time. Proof of age/driver license required.Who do you think is the best car insurance provider in the UK?
Most rental agencies in Florida will not rent to a driver under the age of 25 unless it's contingent on their auto insurance and they were in an accident (rental car coverage offered by many auto insurance policies). Most also will not rent to you unless you have a credit card.Getting car insurance for a hard top convertible at 17 years old?
Insurance follows the vehicle, not the person. You would have to be a named insured for that specific vehicle to recieve any benefits.
