1) Actually YOU are renting the car. Your (insurance ?) company is just picking up the tab, so of course they will check that you have a valid license.

2) Your existing auto insurance will cover you to the extent of your policy (but check with them to make sure). If you want to cover the cost of the rental car deductible (usually $1000 or so) check with your own insurance first.. you will likely find it much cheaper and easier to add.
