Can i insure my car for one week?

Question:
I'm planning to go on a trip, and I have a nice van that i want to use, but since we rarely use it, it isnt insured. Is there anyplace in the US where i can insure the van for 1 week - 1 month, just so it wont be really expensive? To rent a van it would be about $700 and i dont want to do that if I already have a van

Do you have car insurance on other vehicles? If so, call your agent, add the van, then when you get back, call the insurance and take it off. You said you "rarely" use it. Does that mean you use it uninsured? Depending on your state, you can purchase insurance for it while you are using it, then when you put it back in storage - definition of storage varies per state statute - go to comprehensive only coverage (some companies allow this with only one vehicle, some you have to have liability on at least one vehicle). That way, when you use the vehicle, you can add liability back with a phone call because the policy will still be in force. This will cause a bunch of paperwork, but it is better than the alternative! If you buy insurance on it, and cancel the policy a week later, you will be penalized (short rate cancellation). This means the company will keep 10% of the unearned premium. For the sake of argument - if your premium is $520 per year and you cancel the policy after one week of coverage your earned premium would be $10, your unearned premium would be $510. The penalty will be $51. So, you would owe $61 for $10 worth of coverage time. I bet if you told an agent that you plan to cancel the policy after only one week, you will have a hard time finding an agent to write the policy. Due to all the work involved, it is said that it takes 3 years for a policy to be profitable to an agent. So, the agent would be losing a lot of money on the transaction. Your best bet may be to purchase a policy online.

Just add it to your existing auto policy and then take it back off when you return. If you don't have an existing auto policy the only type of policy you would be able to get would be a 6 month policy. You could still cancel the policy when you get back but there may be a cancellation penalty
