Getting Permit and License?

Question:
I'm 19 and dont have a permit or license yet..I've been thing about taking a driving class..But I was told I didnt need the class that I could just go and take the test to get a permit, is that true, I dont know if the class is worth the 350 if I can just go take the test...I was also wondering..If I do take the test and get my permit how long before I can try and get my license?

in some states thaey want you to take a 6 hour coruse, which cost 25, but sence you 19, i say you could take the test,, an if you pass the test an driveing test you will get the permit right then, but be sure the car you take the test in is inc an ready for the road
