Question:
I was due to change my car tax yesterday 28th Feb 2007. I had all the documents ready but the woman over the counter said the number plates on the car tax and insurance certificate didn't match!! She was right - I recently changed my car and rang my insurance company asking them to change the car over. In a few days I got my new insurance certifacte checked through it but didn't spot the mistake. Now I don't have the correct document for my tax and I need my car for my job.

If I apply to renew my driver's licence?
you can ask your insurance for a cover note but that will possibly take as long to get to you as the full one, i would not use your car until you get it sorted, but when my tax was due i was in hospital and i did not renew it , however as soon as i could i got it done and it ended up being 3 weeks late but i did not get a letter etc, i dont think they mind too much as long as you are not taking the mick and leave it for months without declaring sorn or getting a tax and still using the car then that is different.Call your insurance company and ask them to fax or email something over. If they get ars*y just say that any fines that you get you will pass on to them, as it was through there incompetence that this has happened. See how fast they sort it!
In terms of protecting no claims bonus, you can't do this unless you have four years, right?
get the updated insurance form ,like another person said see if they can fax it etc and some main post offices you can buy car tax from as well to save hassle from going to the dvla.Ring Insurance and explain, ask what they can do ASAP.
Definitely ring DVLA and explain that you are sorting it, but they will most probably say don't use car.
But they might also tell you the best thing to do to sort it quick.
Private test drive (UK) - how does insurance work?
Just ring your insurance company & explain what's wrong; there's no point looking for blame, you may have passed the number wrongly or they may have misunderstood you, it really doesn't matter which. The important thing is to ask them to issue a replacement document as soon as they possibly can, either by first-class post or maybe they can fax it to you. If you're nice to them, I'm sure they'll do what they can to help.
