College Auto Insurance Question?

Question:
If I am an Oregon resident attending school in MA, and I buy a car here locally, does my insurance in OR cover me here? Additionally, if I want to add another driver to the vehicle, how do I do that and would I be liable for his damages/injuries to others if he were to crash?

Answers:

Is my brother insured to drive my car during his visit to the UK?

Yes, you are covered. If you have insurance in any state in the US, they are required to provide coverage in all states. They will always cover at least the minimum in each state regardless of what limits you have. For example, in FL, minimum liability is 15/30 ($15k per person, $30k per accident) In NY, it's 25/50. If you live in NY and are driving in FL, (and you have minimum 15/30 insurance in FL) your company will cover you for 25/50.
If you add a driver and that driver has an accident with your car. your insurance company will pay the damage and YOUR insurance will go up. The only way to get that accident off of your record is if that other driver gets his/her own insurance and you submit proof of that insurance to your company.

Title on a new car?

The best thing to do is to call your agent in OR. I have a feeling they may NOT want to cover a vehicle you have with you in school in MA since it is a PIP state and they have odd insurance laws. Most companies do not like MA - I am in a border state to MA & even the companies here don't like it. If they are not licensed to do business there, they steer far far away from it. Yes, if you add a driver to your policy and they are driving your vehicle, you will ultimately be held responsible for damages they do, it is your policy & your car.
If your OR insurance company allows you to keep a car in MA while at school, you will have to register it in OR in the name of the named insured on the policy. You will also probably have to have it inspected in OR (you would have to check with OR DMV to be sure). If you register in MA, you will have to get MA insurance.

My car is going to be auctioned off, at an auction that I can not attend. How do I handle the title?

Your policy will cover you anywhere at least within the continetal US and Canada. Check your policy for coverage in Mexico, (You usually have limited coverage in Mexico).

Will my insurance rates go up?

If you need to make any changes to your policy in regards to adding and or removing a driver or vehicle, contact your agent.

Does anyone know the car insurance laws in new york state?

Everyone of driving age living in your residence should be on your policy either as a scheduled driver or an excluded driver.
If you place someone on your policy as an excluded driver then do not ever allow them to drive your vehicle.
