I'm buying a car in Indiana but I am moving to New York in a couple weeks. Where do I get it registered?

Question:
I have never owned a vehicle before and I am new to all of this. How does vehicle registration work? Don't I need it registered in Indiana to drive it here for the time being? Or should I wait until I get to New York to get it registered? Sorry, I am clueless.

Hardship License?

First thing is it will have to be registered in the State in which it was purchased. That's usually State law (residency restrictions, taxes and all that). Plus you will need to have whatever Insurance the State requires. Once you move to your State of new residence you will then have to re-register the car in that State again with that States required minimum insurance requirements at the least, once again State Law. Now how long you have to register the car in New York I don't know. I'm sure you can easily find that information the net or someone here can tell you that.

Once your vehicle is registered in your new State you will then need to contact your Insurance agent or company and give them all your new information. Don't be surprised if your insurance increases. Different States have different requirements and different limits as well as Insurance companies use different actuary tables for each State each City and in some cases even zip code.

If you are going to drive it in Indiana then it needs to be registered in Indiana, but you can drive on temporary plates, they give you in the dealer if you are going to NY in a few days. But if you are planning on driving it more then 2 weeks in Indiana you need to get it registered there, and you do all this in the DMV. Remember all state's laws are different.

I need a copy for my car title, how I get in short time?

you will have temp. plates.. but you NEED to have insurance on the vehicle and to get insurance you have to have plates..
but I would ask the Indiana BMV.
I live in Indiana but I purchased my car in Oklahoma before moving here.. I kept the temp plates on it, but I did not drive the car, I put it on the back of a uhaul.
So I would call and ask the BMV, they would know best. I would imagine you could get temp. insurance with the temp plates then register in NY.

Car Insurance... Whats the difference between 3rd party fire and theft and fully comp??

First are you buying it from a dealer or a private party. If you are getting it from a dealer. They should take care of everything. If you are buying it from an individual, make sure it has a clear title. Do not take the word of the person from whom you are purchasing the car. Take it to an Indiana license bureau and ask them to check the title. If you go to New York and have a title that is not clear, you may have a problem titling th car in New York. Ask them about a temporary tag (30 or 45) which ever Indian has. One final question, why not buy the car in New York and save yourself the hassle. Make sure your insurance company knows you are going to be driving the car in New York.

Dmv test answers in new jersey?

Carebeara has given you the best advice as you have not said if you got auto from dealer with temp IN plates, OH plates, or from an individual with or without plates or with expired plates! If you bought in Indiana and are a
RESIDENT -- by all means Check with the state motor vehicle licensing
authority of the state which YOU are a resident! If you are military or special government employee tell them. Now, if you bought from dealer with temporary tag -- USE THEM! Secondly, call NY and find out their rules, AND
HOW MUCH IT WILL COST. Third -- are you staying in NY for sure? If not
known, ask how long your IN tags might be good for since you are IN res.
and may be in NY temporarily. DO THIS OR PREPARE TO LOSE $ TO BOTH
STATES [for real sadly lol]
