Auto Insurance - new driver on a permit?

Question:
My 16 yr old has her permit - she needs to drive to get the required hours. On inquiry, my insurance company wants 1500 bucks (Michigan ) to add her to one of (a 98 CRV ) my vehicles. Plain extortion if you ask me. What are my options? I don't have named exclusions on my policy - can she drive without being a named or unnamed driver for that matter - and still be covered? I want her to drive - but that's crazy money that I don't have. Anyone have some good tips for me?

What's the least crowded dmv office in New York?

The first answer is wrong - uninsured motorist is for an accident where the OTHER party is at fault and does not have insurance or has low limits.
Anyway, some companies want to add drivers on their permits, but most will wait to add her when she is licensed. The $1,500 is likely what it will cost to add her when she is licensed. So, I guess it is pay now or pay later. When she is licensed, you HAVE to add her to the policy, unless she gets her own policy which will probably be more. The reason it is so much to add her is that young drivers cause the most accidents & have higher payouts (in general) than adult drivers. Can you send her to driving school to get her hours?
Another suggestion, if you have full coverage on the car & she has to be added to it (it is almost 10 yrs old - will be considered 10 yrs old in Oct this year), take off collision coverage, that will save you some premium. If you want to figure out the approx value of your vehicle go to kbb.com or nada.com. This will help you to decide if you can afford to take off the collision coverage since you would not get any payment for the vehicle if it is in an at fault accident.

I have scratched a rented car and do I have to pay the damage even I had the full insurance on my contract?

Depending on your insurance agent (I have Geico) they should have and "uninsured motorist" in thier policy... this covers anyone driving your car that does not have a car and insurance of thier own. This covers your daughter and anyone else so she does not need to be named.

In Texas are you required to inform your medical insurance company when you are in a car accident?

is it neccesary in michigan for her to be on your insurance before getting her license? if your car is insured and she is driving your car, you or any other adult licensed driver needs to be with her anyway while she is getting her required hours. in cali. it is not neccesary until they are actually licensed. after all the permit does not gaurantee a license. what if they don't pass first test? now when she does get it you will still have to pay for her on your insurance but until then you should be able to hang onto that money a little longer.

Where Do I Find Quotes For Non-Owners Auto Insurance?

Consider yourself lucky you have a "she" because boys are higher than that. No, unless you have her named on your policy she is NOT covered, and getting her own policy is impossible at her age. Sorry, unless you find a company that would be willing to add her for less, and switch, you have no options. Do NOT drop your current insurance without another police in place if you choose that option, or you will have to say "No" to "Do you currently have coverage?" and it will be even higher then.
