If the body shop let you pick up the car and didn't make you pay a deductible at that time, you can figure that the other persons insurance company paid for the damages.

Sometimes, if they do not make that decision quickly and your own insurance has collision coverage, then they pay for the damages-everything but your deductible. If during the repair process, the other company does accept liability, they can then pay the deductible for the repairs, and then pay the rest back to your insurance company. Again, you don't end up paying anything.

Finally, if the accident is your fault, or if the other company denies liability even if the police say it is their fault, then your insurance company will usually make you pay your deductible and they fight it out with the other company. If they are successful, they refund the deductible to you, if not, then you have to pay it.
