Dvla retention certificate stolen?

Question:
I had someone break into my house and stole a load of personal document as well as other things. However, I have just noticed that my dvla retention certificate has gone too. I bought the number plate off a person on ebay 12 months ago and i am only listed as the nominee. I phone up dvla and they told me to get in contact with the person who i bought it off and they cannot discus the matter with me. The problem is I do not know the person i bought it off personal but i have tried to contact him and i have had no response. To add to my worries the number plates retention is due to run out soon. I have explained my circumstances to dvla and they basically said its your problem. Has anyone got any helpful advice as to what if should do?
