How do you transfer a car, when the original owner still owes money to the bank for it?

Question:
My Aunt is going to give me her car, she paid it off but then found out that there are still fees owed to the bank.So they haven't given her the title. How do you go about transfering a car this way? Obviously I will pay the fees but where do I start? With the Bank? Or the DMV? Any info would help! Thanx!

Answers:

Do you think that getting car insurance should be optional?

You have to go through the bank that holds the lein. Make sure your aunt is w/ you when you go, they will have her sign of and give you release of lein form then you can go to motor vehicle.

Wanting to hear your thoughts on insurance reimbursement.?

If she paid it off, why would their be any fees. Sometimes you have to pay to have the lein released at the county or state. Then you have to pay for a new title. If I knew what state you lived in I could look this up for you. But I do not understand a bank charging any fees for releasing the title unless it is Wells Fargo Bank, than anything is possible.
