In the US, your "Title" document shows who the legal owner of the vehicle is.
In Canada, it varies by province. For instance, Ontario's registration document has 2 parts, the "plate portion" and the "vehicle portion." If you bought a new car (and financed it) the plate portion and vehicle portion will both show that you own the vehicle, but a "UVIP" or "Used Vehicle Information Package" available at the DMV will show the seller's lein against the vehicle.
If the vehicle was leased, the plate portion will show your information, while the vehicle portion will show GMAC's, or whomever your leasing company is.
