Its purely the young hoon/ old dog thing, insurance is unlikely to be a major factor if you are a great driver. Prove to the employer you want that you are the calmest, coolest character he will ever meet, you could be driving anything and immediately. Your $$ may not be great for a year or two, but they will lift - demand it. I know of an 18yo hauling 40 tonne of dangerous goods in an '06 Scania B-Train, jacking the trailers into tight yards, and never getting phone complaints, that kid will earn good $$ as a driver, or become an owner operator pronto. you probably wont find any as its for insurance purposes, you have to be over 21 to be able to go on a company insurance policy for a van, anything over that (hgv etc etc) you will need to be over 25 yes, pain in the bum lol, hope this has helped you out.i am 35 have B,,C,C1,EC,EC1,D, all lgv and cant get a decent job in Ireland after the Eastern Europeans came over the money is crap now ,i now work as a security officer and its better cash,but 23 here in Ireland is too young for insurance and would be the same in UK i would think!

I'm afraid that most employers won't take you on until your are 25+ due to insurance prices on under 25's. I'm not sure where they now stand with the new legislation on age though (an employer shouldn't actually ask your for your date of birth anymore as it may be construed as an intention to discriminate on the grounds of age). The issue is probably to do with insurance. If you can't get a job driving you could just get a job to keep you going and see if you can do any volunteer work (delivering stuff for charities) that involves driving this sort of vehicle in order to gain experience. The Armed Forces also have drivers so that is another avenue to explore.

Its the same here in NZ our transport industry is desperately short of drivers. Unfortunately Insurance is a major concern for companies everywhere and some of them just cant afford the premiums that are charged for under 25's.All the very best for your future , if drivings what you want.. dont give up!

if there are any local or family firms near you they may employ you before your 25, otherwise you have a long wait the best thing to do would be to go and face the proposed employer instead of going through job ads good luck (there are a few under 25 truckers in this area but all working for family based firms such as so and so and son , you know wat i mean)More Questions & Answers ...
