How Do I Register my car if I don't have a place to live yet?

Question:
I'm going to be moving from NY to Los Angeles in about a month. I will be staying with my friend for a week or so while I look for an apartment. I'm going to need to buy a car out there. But how do I register it and insure it if I haven't found a place?

What is the least amount of car insurance I need to have on a car that doesn't have a loan on it?

If it takes me longer to find a place than a car, I'd rather not spend more money renting a car than I have to.
