An insurance claim question.?

Question:
In January this year, through no fault of my own, or anyone elses, my elevating roof blew off my camper van in Morocco. I was insured for the year TPF&T but had a Fully Comp Green Card (with protected NCD) for the period of the trip. I did take photos at the scene, and I have since renewed insurance with another insurer (in September). The estimate for repairs from the original conversion company is nearly £5000 so a claim looks likely.
My questions are: Can I still claim for the roof repair after this length of time, I appreciate I may have to pay an an excess. Also, if I claim now, should I notify my current insurer as technically it was not my fault. I don't want to have higher premiums when the incident wasn't my, or anyone elses, fault.
Any info or suggestions will be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Unfortunately, the claim in question will be termed a 'fault' claim - you won't have a choice about that.

Driving licence back with in a week...is this a record or what?

A fault claim is one which your insurance provider has not retrieve all costs of the claim. A no-fault claim means that you insurance company has retrieved all costs from the third parties insurance provider. As there is no third party here, it will have to go down as a fault claim - something to consider before you claim.

If you do have to claim, when it comes to renewal or switching insurance provider, be sure to get on the phone to explain your claim situation. They'll be forgiving given the circumstance and you've done the right things to take pictures at the scene etc.

not sure about the length of time to claim but you will have to notify your current insurers if you do claim cos it will still count as a claim even if its not your fault, and it will no doubt bump up the premium you will pay. but once its resolved you will get your money back,

If you renewed with another insurer, then you are screwed I would say. Just another screwball getting screwed by the insurance companies for ignorance.

What forms of ID do you need to get your license plates renewed?

This is a weird one. Had it been something like a theft, and you had a police reference for it to prove when it happeened, then you probably could have claimed for the loss as you had proof that the loss ocurred whilst it was on cover with the previous insurer.

However your problem is that there is no way you can prove when this damage happened. As far as your old insurers are concerned, this damage could have happened yesterday and therefore has nothing to do with them.

Not that I am recommending this as it's a bit fraudulent......but you could claim on your current policy if it's comprehensive. They don't need to know that the damage happened last year.....obviously you won't do this as insurance fraud is illegal.

I also note that you said that the damage is £5,000. Unless your camper van is brand new and worth £9,000+ that sort of cost is DEFINATELY going to write it off.
