Question:
I was driving my friends car (he is 23) at about 10:30pm Saturday night. I normally wouldn't do that, but he wasn't feeling well and didn't think he could drive and I needed to be home. There was no drugs or alcohol involved, so no worries there. He just bought the car and hasn't changed his plates (his car is registered and everything) so we got pulled over. The cops asked for my license and OH MY GOD I didn't have it. So I got a fix-it ticket to show some random cop my ID, to get the plates changed, and to appear in court to testify I was insured at the time of the citation. So how do I show that the plates changed (he said something about getting two plates) if the car isn't mine? And I am only 17, if I am insured it's through my parents, so is there any way that his insurance covered me? And if they find that I wasn't covered, what's the worst they can do? I am really nervous over this, I know it was stupid to drive but I actually thought it was responsible. Ahh!

I have Sri Lankan Driving Licence. Can I have a DL in frederick MD without training?
autoenhancer is correct. the liability insurance is for the car and unless you are excluded by name from it, anyone driving his car is automatically covered. now the deal about driving without a driver's license is a different story, you can still get a ticket unless you have a learner's permit. you can always claim he was teaching you to drive and most judges would be ok with that pending you didn't violate any other traffic laws. good luck!Where do I find insurance for a 1956 Green Goddess fire engine?
btw what are you doing with a 23 y/o @ 10:30pm? your only 17 y/o. sorry, just the parent in me!
YOU WILL HAVE TO GO TO COURT AND BRING HIS INSURANCE CARD STATING THAT HE HAD INSURANCE ON THE DAY YOU WERE PULLED OVER. IT SHOULDN'T MATTER IF YOU ARE COVERED OR NOT. AS FAR AS THE PLATES GO I'M NOT SURE WHAT YOUR SAYING. IF HE HAD PLATES OFF A DIFFRENT CAR. YOU CAN TRY BRINGING THE REGISTRATION DOWN AND EXPLAINING IT TO THEM.
ABOUT CAR INSURANCE: what COMPREHENSIVE and COLISION mean?
Most insurance should follow the car, not the driver.Thats why the cost is determined on the cost to cover it... You got fix-it tickets for the lic., show a cop. fix it for the plates.well, it should have had tags in the window if the plates werent there...so when he gets the plates, take a picture...(if he didnt lie about registration and insurance) You may try to show them your insurance...depends on the state law on that one. Although with the reg and all that, it's just like drugs, if someone drops them in a car your driving and says they aren't theirs, YOU are responsible. Being the driver means you should know ALL that happens in your domain (car) Watch more cops...Don't worry. When you go to court, bring your parents, and their proof of your insurance coverage. Have your friend come, too, and bring his insurance proof, and the proof that he changed the plates. I don't think you are in any trouble. You did a good thing, he could have wrecked if he had gotten any sicker. Be very respectful in court, say yes, your honor, or yes, ma'am, yes, sir, as appropriate. It will be okay.
Insurance goes with vehicles, not drivers, so if you were driving with his permission, you were covered. You appear in court, show your license and get that charge dismissed. Then you tell the judge you were driving a friend's car with permission. Bring your friend with to show he has the two required plates and insurance and that charge should be dismissed also.
How many questions can you get wrong on a dmv written test?
The only problem may be that his insurance wouldn't cover a minor, you really should have him find out for sure before you drive his car again.
How many points can i get before my license is suspended in VA?
When people say the insurance goes with the car, they are only half correct. It also goes with the driver. Example, Your parents policy covers you so if yu drive your friends car, your insurance is secondary coverage in case the other policy is not valid. your friend needs to get an id card from his agent if possible and you also need something from your agent to take to court with you saying you have coverage if the friends car is uninsured. I'm not knowledgeable about this other stuff. One other thing to consider is ; does your friend have a policy in his own name. He may not have a legal right to let someone else drive, if the policy is in his parents name.More Questions & Answers ...
