Can PIP coverage in MA be stopped before it reaches the limit you paid a premium for?

We live in MA. My gf was in an accident in march of 06 and she had paid for 8,000 in PIP coverage. However she recieved a bill several months later saying her PIP was exhausted at 2,000. What is going on? How can they do that?

If she was released from treatment, then yes, they do not have to pay the policy limits. If she only had $2,000 in medical bills that is all they will pay. Did she go to an IME (independent medical exam)? If so, if that doctor said she cannot be made any better than she is, they can cut her off. If she continued treatment after an IME told her she was done, then PIP will not pay any more, the rest would have to come out of her pocket, or her health insurance.

If the letter stated that the PIP was exhausted then the adjuster only sees 2000 in coverage on the policy. If you believe there is 8000 call the adjuster and speak with them about it.
