My M reg Mondeo Estate was written off in a car park bump because of a small dent. I am not happy with the valuation and have written back wanting more money. They now want to settle this by sending an external engineer at my expense if they agree with the original valuation. Is this fair and how should I take this further? The third party have claimed responsibility but I am going though my insurance as I am fully comp.

To be honest a M reg mondeo is not going to be valued at very much ( I work at a car dealer and without any details about your car the average price we would give in part ex would be around £350). If I were in your situation I would be getting adverts form Auto trader,Loot,Ad trader as well as local dealers to show how much it would cost to replace your car. Unfortunatley older cars are not worth much on computer databases (that why I buy them when they do come in as most purchase prices for a cheap car is less than one months finance payment on a new car). There are many factors that reduce a cars price, Mileage,service history,mot status,written off perviously, etc, etc.If you post your car details, (reg no is best as it can be hpi'd before I do a valuation) ,If your uncomfortable with that just post model (I.e 1.8 glx petrol/diesel),year,mileage and I can give you a cap price (a dealer guide for part ex's)
The insurance company are out to make money, do not except that the engineer's cost is down to you.Put up a decent case of the costs of replacing your car and they should reconsider their offer.

Altenativley If it is just a dent and the paint hasn't been broken then phone one of the many paintless dent removal companies that advertise in the yellow pages and you can proberly get it repaired for about £50.
Can a new car be registered to 2 person even though there's only one name on the loan?
If not get them to pay out and buy the car back from them and live with the dent.
What figures have you been given for valuation and repair costs? The car will be worth practically nothing.

this car is only worth about £200-£400 maximum-assuming excellent condition and you are trading it in. What have you been offered?The value of your 'car' is what it is and no amount of whining will make it worth more. Can you locate some other vehicles like yours for sale in your area? If so then compare prices -- you know it could be they are making a fair settlement offer...
