'Blue laguna' has the best answer here. I live in Germany and before I imported my car here I had to tax it one last time. Doing it online is really easy. If you have your V5 and MOT certificate(new format) then you can apply for your tax disc online. You don't need your insurance documents as the information about your car is shared between the insurance companies and the DVLA. so they know if you are covered or not.
