My carfax report on this car showed a clear title. The ebay listing showed a clear title. I received the car and it has a tag that says untitled car. I've tried contacting the seller about the title but haven't heard back yet. Is this uncommon for a car not to have a title? Do I have ownership? How do I register my car?

Don't buy a car on ebay.......first mistake.if you have a invalid drivers licencse in a state , can you get one in another state?
you will have to go to the dmv and file for a lost title but it will cost you. But my husband is reading over my shoulder and he says you wont be able to get one he says the last registered owner has to do it. He says send the car back and get your money back.you don't...no title no registration. I hope you payed for the car in a means you can recover your money and have the seller just come get the car.

Contact eBay right away and tell them. The previous owner has to give you the title. It is very difficult to get a title otherwise and nearly impossible <depending on the state> to register without one! Also get hold of your credit card company if you paid that way or paypal or whatever. That's fraud.Does car insurance pay out on behalf of the driver if they crash and injur another person?

A lot depends upon what state you are in and the age of the car. For example GA does NOT title cars after a certain number of years. I suppose other states do the same. I moved to another state from GA with an old truck. The new state titled it based on a bill of sale.Since Carfax showed a clear title, I think it will be ok. I hope you paid by PayPal or some other method where your money is protected.

I have only bought one car through eBay, but I would never buy one long distance. I took the Cashier's Check with me to pick up the car. I checked the title, mileage, and condition of the car BEFORE I gave the fellow the money. I am real happy with the car and would buy off eBay again, but ALWAYS be very careful.
You have what the English call a "sticky wicket", - this is a mess that could be a big problem! I would first of all get a total printed copy of all the ebay information. You can go back for quite a while and still get this on line I think! In some states you can get a "new title" (Texas is where I live and you can get them here), - however it takes quite a while to have it researched and is about $150 (here).

The better approach would be to make the seller get you the title, - this could take a while also! And I think Ebay will back you in getting the money returned. However - if it is a long way to take car back this is going to cost you a little (or bunch?).

In some states you can buy a "rustbucket parts car" with a good title, and use all the plates, and other ID plates (the car has to be the same year model, # of doors, and body series etc, -- but I would make sure that you still have a "cleared certified" (if possible) bill of sale, - because you might have to prove along the line somewhere it isn't a stolen vehicle! If the car is really a good vehicle, - of antique value, -- it might be worth going the new title, or "different title" route. Of course it has to be worth the trouble and expense to make it worth it!

As to "ownership", - that is debateable, but right now you have "posession", and of you have information (copies) recipt (bill of sale) - you can prove that -(if it is stolen -you didn't do it)!! This allows you some protection from theft charges, but you still have the problem of money invested, and ability to register it so you can drive it! It is possible to end up in court if the previuous owner comes looking for it!
