What could cause Cylinder #4 to miss on 1991 Tercel?

Question:
I have a 1991 Tercel, 5spd, 1.5L 4cyl engine. It was running great until last week. I was driving on the highway and while cruising, it started to lose power and vibrate a little. Slightly higher exhaust noise. I got home and isolated the #4 cylinder missing. New plugs did not help. I triede new wires and new cap and no help. I took an injector from another tercel and replaced the #4 injector, no help. I inspected the lines and they appeared OK. No leaks visible, but there is now a slight scent of gasoline while it is running. No unusual smoke coming form exhaust. Does anyone have any ideas? Why would it start to miss while cruising at noral RPM on the highway? Any help is greatly appreciated.

The first thing you need to do is pull the number 4 spark plug out and test compression..Compression gauges are pretty cheap and are sold at any part stores...Remove the coil wire when you do the test, and make sure you get atleast three engine revolutions before you stop cranking...You should have about 120 pounds or better of compression...The cylinder will normally run on about 90 pounds of compression, but that is a pretty weak reading

The reason you smell fuel is because that cylinder is puming raw fuel into the exhaust...It cannot ignite it because it probably doesnt have sufficient compression to do so..

IF you are lacking compression, you may have lost a valve. or Possibley a head gasket...Depending on what compression gauge you buy, so allow you to pressure the cylinder up with an air compressor...By Relieving spring pressure from the valves you can tell if the air passes by the valves into the intake or exhaust system...If the valves are good, you will hear a little air escape into the crank case..

Could be a valve related problem.

Ford f250 5.8 leaking oil by filter just above pan out of some kind of sensor with one wire what is it?

Assuming you probably now have a fully functional ignition system, and fuel system, as you've replaced many parts, you probably looking at a sticking valve, or a damaged valve seat. Either way I think your looking at a valve problem. you would need to remove the cylinder head, and send it to a machine shop to be rebuilt.

What are the wheel alignment specs on a 2005 chevy Z71?

It would be nice to test it though using a cylinder leak down gauge, you can put air into the cylinder, and see if it's leaking out the tailpipe or the intake manifold. A fast way to test for a leaking exhaust valve is to put a piece of paper over the tail pipe while the engine is running, it will suck the paper in, and blow it back out making a pop noise.

Hi,
If it does not miss at idle it could be a lifter or valve problem or as simple as a vaccum leak. You would need to start with a vaccum test(low and high RPM's)and maybe a compression test. If you smell fuel it is probably because of the miss. There could be an outside chance that the intake could be cracked.

have you checked the Fuel Press Reg? Sounds like you may have a fuel problem. And as long as you are doing it check your filter.
