Question:
The symtoms are: when you press on the accelerator the engine RPMS rise, the car slowly takes off and it makes a loud whining sound...higher pitched than a power steering pump... Once you get going everything seems fine. I was told it was a bad torque converter. Is it? Or is it someting else inside the transmission?
Answers:
Does anyone know of any Car maintanence websites?
CHECK THE FLUID LEVEL in the trans. if the fluid level is fine, what color is it? does it smell burnt?doubt its the conv., they rarely fail, but should be replaced with a trans. job.

You didn't say what year or how many miles. If the fluid is burnt, the transmission could just be worn out. A tranny with worn clutch packs will "slip" and burn the fluid. If the fluid is fresh, and the tranny seems to be "slipping", its the converter for sure.
I have to replace a starter and I need a manual for a toyota rva4.?
I've blown up many a tranny in my day. If the engine revvs up over 2000 and the car just sort of tries to move, its the converter. Whining, buzzing, etc are classic "dead torque converter" noises. The torque converter is sorta like the clutch in a standard tranny.
If the converter is bad, the tranny needs a rebuild as well. When a converter fails, it often puts metal shavings in the tranny's fluid passages and cooler lines. This ruins the tranny and contaminates the cooler system.
