Do i have a blown head gasket?

Question:
Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to provide. My car is a 95 ford contour and it runs great. Has 76,000 miles on it and its a stick. I just payed a mechanic 325 to fix the pullys on the timing belt, but i have the car back and it is smelling funny, like gas and coolant. I figure it is burning the coolant cause i have to refill the reserve 3 times a week(at least) I loked in the oil and there is no sighn of coolant in there, and like i said the car runs fine. If there are any suggestions that may be other possible causes other than a blown head, please help me out. I really cant afford to pay to get a head replaced. So again thank you in advance for any help you may provide. Have a great weekend and remember buzzed driving is drunk driving..

Does any1 know of a website that guides step by step removal of 350 engines?

i would return my car to the mechanic who did the work on your car and explain it to him. he may hve hooked up something incorrectly. or forgot to put somthing back on that he took off. at the very least he could diagnose if you have a new problem that had nothing to do with his work. I am an alignment technician and own my own shop. the words that i dread hearing the most are... "ever since you worked on my car.." but you can bet i'll do whatever it takes to make my customer happy.

how much would it cost to get an 1994 integra painted tangerine orange?

If you have to refill the coolant twice a week, look under the car and see if it is wet.(not on the ground, on the engine and undercarriage). If it's wet, you may have a pinhole in one of the radiator hoses, one that doesn't pump water out when it's sitting still. You should have the radiator pressure tested to find the leak..

CALLING ALL MECHANICS! What is the HEART OF AN ENGINE???

If you haven't replaced any oil and you don't see any signs of oil on your engine block then you haven't blown your head gasket. You are most in likely smelling the sweet smell of coolant as it is being burned or vaporized on your motor and since you have to replace the coolant 3 times a week you most in likely have a busted hose or your water pump is blown. These are the normal reasons that you would be filling you coolant as often as you say.

Why is car smoking? A friend has a 1999 VW Jetta. Sometimes it smokes, then sometimes not.?

Not likely a blown head gasket. The car would not "run great" if it was. Blown head gaskets will generally put a lot of pressure back in the radiator causing the coolant to overflow at the cap or reserve tank. Also the cooling system may have air in it and can be relieved via a wingnut type valve usually found at the highest point on the system on a hose. Also look for leaks in radiator or hoses. Look for coolant on ground or floor in the mornings b4 your start the car. Check the passenger floorboard for signs of coolant in the carpet as it can leak from the heater core as well. With the car at operateing temp. (warmed up) have someone watch the tailpipe while you rev the engine to see if water is comeing out there. (Note: engine must be warmed up to try this test as it is natural for some condensation to be in the exhaust system when engine is cold.)

Trouble starting?

Find out where the coolant is going. you said there is no water in the oil do you have a leak in one of your hoses or is your radiator leaking. Usally with a blown head gasket the engine will smoke and miss then the water mixes with your oil and if you keep driving it it will lock up. Cheap fix buy some liquid glass at walmart and follow the directions this is only a temporary fix.

Is there enough room in the engine bay to remove the side pan on a 4t60 trans in an 89 LeSabre?

sounds like your mechanic caused a leak bring it back to him and tell him that something is wrong he probably broke a gasket putting it back together . If it was a head gasket your oil would look milky

How to replace oil sensor on '89 GMC p/u w/305 CID engine?

Definately not a head gasket. You would have almost no power, white smoke from your tail pipe and coolant in the oil. You probably have a leak somewhere, most likely a loose hose clamp or a cracked hose. Look around the car, if you don't see anything obviously dripping look for white residue around any and all parts of the cooling system. The white residue will lead you to where the leak is.

Why is my 2.8 liter engine in my 1993 GMC Sonoma running so rich that it fouls the plugs?

Hard to say from your description. I would suggest looking for coolant leaks, such as the water pump behind the timing cover.
A reputable mechanic would have spotted this however when he replaced the timing belt. Otherwise look for signs of coolant leaks around the hose clamps and edges (seams) of the radiator. If you smell it in the interior, you may have a heater core leaking.
