Why am i losing power in my mondeo?

Question:
we have driven the car approx 150 miles today, just as we were doing the last 5 of those, our mondeo started to lose power when accelorating, generally when pulling of from being stationary!
the engine is getting to about 5000 revs and stuggling to get beyond 10mph!
its a p reg 1997 car.
Anyone have any idea why this may be happening - its been fine all day?

CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID IMMEDIATLY!!! Do not drive!!! if you (try) to drive it, it could burn up your transmission. it is more than likely leaking and low on fluid. add trans fluid..bring it to a shop, and have the leak repaired.
