Why does my 74 cadillac ping going uphill with more than one passanger in it?

Doesnt really ping with only me in the car but pings up slight grades with 3 or more people in it, why?

i own a repair shop,and it probably needs a better grade of gas in it,either that or it needs a tune up,the timing when its set too low on one will cause it to ping like this,its called spark knock,and is caused by slow timing or cheaper grades of fuel,good luck,i hope this help,s.

Engine ping is caused by bad gas, an engine that is out of time and needs service and possably spark knock too.

there can be a number of causes for the ping...but my first guess being that old of a car is that your timing chain is getting loose and you are out of time. It could also be your EGR valve isn't working.

Windshield Wipers Maintenance...?

To check the EGR valve...simply pinch off the hose going to it with some locking pliars or a set of forceps...if this fixes the ping then there is your problem. If not...remove the distributor cap...then have someone put a socket and ratchet on the crank pulley...have them turn it one way then the other...if the engine turns but the distributor has a lag in turning then your timing chain is loose and about to go.

Pinging means lower octane in your gasoline. Try a higher grade or put octane booster in your tank when filling up.

a car of that age wasn't made to run on todays gas is probaly the biggest thing. We have 2 Quads on the farm and they will do the same thing on regular gas. try burning the next grade up of fuel and see if it helps.
